VA Motorcyclist ID'd After Construction Zone Crash On I-83 At MD/PA Line: Coroner

A 48-year-old Virginia motorcyclist has been identified at a Pennsylvania hospital following an airborne crash in a construction zone at the Maryland state line, the York County Coroner's office announced late on Sunday, April 14.

Vann Ashe II of the 13800 block of Jefferson Park Drive, Herndon, was traveling with a group of motorcyclists on Interstate 83 South near Exit 36 when they "entered a construction zone with uneven surfaces. The area was clearly marked ahead of the construction alerting drivers of the situation. However, during the process of switching lanes in the area of the uneven surfaces, it is reported that the [48-year-old man] crashed and was thrown from his motorcycle. A second motorcyclist crashed while attempting to avoid the [...] motorcyclist. (The condition of the second motorcyclist is not known [...])," the coroner's office stated in its release citing the Maryland State Police. 

Vann was taken to Wellspan York Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and he died at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, 2024, as detailed in the release. 

Deputy Coroner Scott Pennewill was called to Wellspan York Hospital to investigate and certify Vann's death.

There was no autopsy and a routine toxicology was performed, as noted by the coroner. His cause of death was "Multiple Blunt Force Trauma due to Motorcycle Crash" and the manner was ruled accidental, the coroner said.

His next of kin were notified. 

Vann was a class of 1992 graduate of Northern Virginia Community College and a class of 1996 graduate of Norfolk State University with a degree in Business Marketing, according to his social media. He held several related roles over the years, most recently he was a Territory Sales Manager at SoNo 1420 America's Maritime Distillery. 

He began studying at Northern Virginia Community College in 2020, according to his Facebook. 

Public records show he has lived in Laurel, MD, Alexandria, and North Chesterfield. 

His community has been sharing about their loss on his last Instagram post of his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

His last tweet or x post was hoping we all have a "good day".

Funeral and memorial service details have not been released at the time of publishing but a fundraiser to help his family has been launched, you can find the details in the Facebook post below.
